Your boss just told you that you’re being transferred to the Houston office. And you’ve done some homework on where to live, a community with lots of trees, great schools (public and private), terrific shopping and dining, and the best real-estate values in the Houston area. In all likelihood, the name Spring, Texas has popped up over and over again. So – you take the logical next step and get out a map and . . . you can’t find it!
There’s a simple reason for that. There is no such thing as Spring, Texas. Yup, that’s right. We don’t exist – as a true political entity. Spring is nothing more than a collection of ZIP codes (77373, 77379, 77388, 77386 to name a few) to which the USPS has assigned the name Spring for mailing-address purposes.
Spring has no city limits. We don’t have a mayor. Or a City Hall. Or a town council. Or a Chamber of Commerce. Or police and fire departments. Or any other distinct feature that will help you explain to your friends and family where it is you’ve chosen to live! Yes, some maps show a little dot with the name Spring next to it, on Spring-Cypress Road, just east of I-45. That’s a quaint little (unincorporated) community we refer to as “Old Town Spring” to distinguish it from the rest of the area. Over the years, Old Town Spring has developed into a neat little collection of craft and clothing shops and some pretty good family-style restaurants (check out CorkScrew BBQ if you’re in the area!). Old Town Spring is a popular tourist stop, especially during the holidays – check it out at www.OldTownSpring.com.
If you’re looking on a map, Spring includes (roughly speaking) most of the Harris County area north of Beltway 8, west of U.S. 59 and east of S.H. 249. Not all of that area has a Spring mailing address, but a pretty good chunk of it does. And Spring extends on into south Montgomery County to include some of the area adjacent to The Woodlands, on the east side of I-45.
Don’t worry about law enforcement and fire protection – the entire Spring area is blessed with an abundance of terrific volunteer fire departments, ambulance services, and the great law-enforcement teams of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department and a couple of outstanding Constable Precincts. We really don’t lack for much of anything! Most of what happens around here (politically) is controlled or influenced by the Harris County Commissioners’ offices.
